A Random Lil Challenge :)

The other night we were having a great debate about the color of our old tractor……

My dear darling but WRONG hubby INSISTED it was green like our current one!

Kimi and Aimee both remember it being a bright blue……and were not about to back down. I recalled it being blue also but figured I would stay out of the *fight*…haha and well Calliope wasnt even around when we had that tractor BUT…she figured if her sisters thought it was blue it was BLUE…. *wink*

Hmmmmmmm how to solve this problem???????

Aimee to the rescue! She quickly ran to the large shelf full of scrapbooks and pulled out one she was sure would have photos of the tractor in it and she was right! Several layouts in that album showed various family activities centered around the tractor….rides in the yard, tilling up garden and Daddy teaching his small daughters how to steer and shift… AND GUESS WHAT??????????? YUP YUP YUP…the old tractor WAS……ready for this??? B…L…U…E !

After that lil debate was finished…we looked thru that large scrapbook and then 2 more…talking about the fun times we had. It was a wonderful way to spend some family time! My darling hubby then made a comment which made me happy to the core……… he said–”we wont ever had to look at a photo and wonder about it. Mom has made a history for us!”

So altho this isnt a challenge where you scrap or even create something–I challenge you to set aside some time to pull out some of your OLDEST scrapbooks and spend some family time looking at them. You wont regret it I promise :) (you might even win a lil fight or two..hehe)

Technique Article: Queen & Co. Felt Fusion

If you’re like me, then you just loved the Queen & Co. Felt Fusion borders when they were released and had to have them all! However, the first time I went to use a 12″ piece of the cream scroll, it was definitely difficult to get it to lay down on my LO without it sticking to itself and everything else. I persisted and was ultimately successful, but my first venture into using Felt Fusion was absolutely a challenge. Love the look, but Felt Fusion is some extremely sticky stuff!

Since that first time, I’ve learned some techniques for working with Felt Fusion and thought I would share with all of you.

————————-

Tip 1: If using Felt Fusion as a 12″ border, only remove the paper backing and expose the adhesive in select areas. Trust me, exposing the adhesive in just a few areas makes it so much easier to work with this product and the adhesive is so sticky that the border will stay stuck to your LO without any problem.

I tried this trick and have to admit that I found a border of Felt Fusion much easier to work with.

————————-

Tip 2: Like I said, this is sticky stuff, so put all that stickiness to work for you by removing the paper backing and laying the border down in loose glitter or fun flock.

I also tried this trick with a small piece of the green leaf border. The glitter stuck to the adhesive back of the Felt Fusion really well and, best of all, there’s minimal shedding of the glitter.

If you use this trick, of course, you will be adhering the Felt Fusion to your LO felt side down. I recommend that you use Ranger Glossy Accents - it worked perfectly to adhere the glittered Felt Fusion to my LO.

————————-

Tip 3: Look for opportunities to accessorize Felt Fusion. Consider adding stitching, buttons, brads, bling - the possibilities are endless.

————————-

My final tip is to visit the Queen & Co. blog for additional ideas: http://queenandcompany.typepad.com. Two recent tips have been to use Glimmer Mist to color Felt Fusion and to use Felt Fusion to decorate Easter eggs.

I hope you have fun playing with Queen & Co. Felt Fusion!

Practice makes Perfect!

When you open a magazine or look through an online gallery at people’s scrapbook layouts what is the first thing that catches your eye and makes you slow down for a better look? If you are like me it is the photographs that make or break a layout.

When I started scrapbooking, the photos I was working with were not the worst, but there were lots of times I wished I had something better to work with. As my scrapbooking developed I started noticing my photography improving as well. I knew what kinds of photos scrapped well, I knew what kinds of photos I WISHED I had of different events or places, and I took my pictures accordingly. I did more of my cropping ahead of time through the lens rather than after I got my prints, I started paying attention to backgrounds and shadows and things like that. Above all I took LOTS more pictures!

I think it is a lot like any sport or craft or other skill. To improve you must practice. Don’t treat your camera like a lot of people did their musical instruments when they were in school. You know….take it out for a concert once or twice a year and maybe on a special occasion to show off for the relatives or something. The folks who became the GOOD musicians were the ones who practiced all the time and kept at it. So let’s get our cameras out of those bags and of the top shelf in the closet and take some pictures!

Did you know there is a photo challenge on Scrap Shanty every week?? Yup…every Wednesday a new “assignment” is given and we all grab our cameras and see what we can come up with that fits the theme. And of course don’t forget to share your handiwork in the challenge forum. If there are at least 6 participants in a given week a lucky player will win a small RAK! If the topic doesn’t speak to you this week…come back next week, there will be another one. The most important thing is to keep that shutter clicking!!

April’s Sketch Challenge

Well March has come and gone and now with a heavy heart I have to say that we will no longer be allowing anyone to ever again use a sketch.

APRIL FOOLS!!

Just kidding sorry, I just couldn’t help myself!! Of course we still want you to use our sketches and since today is the first Tuesday of April here is our sketch for April’s Sketch Challenge by Amy B.

Here is what I did with Amy’s sketch (and I used this month’s manufacturer sponsor too One Heart One Mind).

Now remember my guidelines for playing, you don’t have to follow the sketch to the letter, take an interesting element and make it your own if you want to. Just let us know how the sketch inspired you. Post your layout in the gallery and link it here to the challenge thread. Once I get at least 7 people this month to play we will throw all the names in the hat for a little RAK. Digital girls you guys can play too, I will have something for you if you win too!!

And a quick congratulations to JUDY!! She was our RAK winner for March’s Sketch Challenge. Here is a link to see her layout!!

Do What You Don’t Do

Hi Shanty and friends!!! Welcome to another wonderful blog challenge day!

I have been doing a lot of thinking lately about comfort zones not only in scrapbooking but in life itself. It is only human nature to lean towards the familiar and stay clear from the unknown. Well, applying this thought to my scrapbooking I decided to list at the least 5 things that I normally don’t do when it comes to my work.

1. I don’t DO simple pages

2. I don’t DO paper peicings

3. I don’t DO centered photos

4. I don’t DO computer journalings

5. I don’t DO double pages

Now looking at this list I realized that inspiration and growth was right in front of me so I snatched one of these DON’T DOs and DID it!

This is a simple page that I completed and let me tell you it was a challenge for me not to load this page with my normal goodies. I kept it clean, simple, and pretty!

Here is the fun part for all of you! My challenge to you is to go make that list of 5 things that you don’t do and from out that 5 choose one. Play around with it, have fun with it, and you will be amazed what you can do when YOU do what you don’t do!

Till next time!

March’s Sketch Challenge

I am very excited to be taking over the reins of the monthly sketch challenge from Kim. I promise each month to bring you a great sketch from one of the talented DT members along with my layout based on that sketch!!

For my first month of this challenge I picked out a sketch that is pretty simple and can be done just as is or can be changed a little and dressed up. Now remember with these you don’t have to follow them exactly, just use them as a spring board to get your creative juices flowing.

Here is our March Sketch by Stinkerbelle:

The one thing that I love about this sketch is you could totally use different numbers of photos, two 4×6 photos, three 5×3 photos or one long panoramic photo.

This is my version of the sketch:

Now I challenge everyone to try this sketch, if I get at least 6 people to try it and they post it here I will put everyone who does a layout using the sketch’s name in a hat and have Evan pick out a winner for a little RAK from me on April 1st. Post your layout in the gallery and post a link here in the challenge thread to get your name put in the hat.

Christi’s thoughts and feeling on the Pros and Cons of digital vs. paper scrapbooking

A little history lesson about my experience on the subject; I have been a paper scrapper off and on a little over the last 8 years, at first I heard about scrapbooking I thought what is this I keep hearing about? When I finally figured it out, there was no stopping me, I couldn‘t let my children‘s photos rot in a box! I became an scrapbook addict with in minutes.

Then about 2 years ago I kept hearing about digital scrapbooking, same deal, what is this? I tried it out, at the time it just seemed to hard, and time consuming. So I shelved the idea for about a year, then I thought I would give it one more try and this time I was successful. I don’t recall how or why, but I did it! I was so proud at my self accomplishment. Now I have been digital scrapping for about a year, and I am not a pro by any means, there is tons I still need to learn, but I wanted to share as a newbie to the digital world some of the pros and cons I have experienced on the subject. Yes, I still call myself a newbie to digital scrapping.

Christi’s Pros on digital scrapping vs. paper

One of my favorite things about digital scrapping is being able to download whatever I need right from my computer. I don’t need to travel 30 minutes to my LSS to find what I need.

Digital scrapbook pages can still be inspiring to paper scrappers.

For scrappers who may have problems using their hands, digital scrapping is a way to make that easier.

You still get your creative outlet digital scrapping.

Digital scrapbooking does not take up as much space, and if you are like me, there is also not a big mess left behind to clean up.

I am pretty good about taking pictures, I am pretty bad about getting them printed. Digital scrapping is a good way for me to get my pictures scrapped while they are still fresh in my memory.

I love the 3D effect you can get with digital scrapping without having to have a bulky layout.

You can use your digital scrapbooking supplies over and over again. The price of real vs. digital is comparable in a good way.

You can change the color of any paper or embellishment to coordinate with whatever you want.

Cropping your photos, I remember when I first started I cropped my photos with my handy dandy paper trimmer, next I started printing my photos myself at home and would crop them with my photo editing software before I would print them. Now a days I add them to my digital page already configured to the size I need.

Tutorials there are many tutorials out there in both digital and paper scrapping. There are tutorials out there for just about every kind of program out there. One thing I have noticed about some of the tutorials, they can be hard to follow if you don’t know to use your program. Learned that the hard way, hey what’s this? A Manual!

All the freebies! Need I say more?

Christi’s Cons on digital vs. paper

I personally print a lot of my pictures at home (when I do actually print them), I have also printed a lot of my digital pages, mostly I print them on photo paper because I feel the quality is better. I am concerned about how much it cost to print on good quality photo paper plus the cost on ink vs. having it be printed somewhere else. A lot of my digital scrapbook pages are not printed due to this and are going unseen by my family and friends.

12×12 printers at the moment are expensive, so if I am printing out my page I personally have to print it out as 8×8 and mount it on to 12×12 coordinating cardstock. I am not sold on the smaller size albums idea yet.

I know that handwriting vs. typing is an issue, I hate my handwriting, as do many scrappers, I love all the fun different fonts out there, but I also learned in my early days that handwritten journaling creates a very personal touch. So it is my belief that using the fun fonts is great, still include some handwritten journaling in some of your layouts.

Going to crops, I have to admit it would be weird to sit among your friends in front of a laptop doing digital pages at a crop. Could you just imagine? I personally go to crops to not only scrap, but socialize, shop, and take a break from reality.

Cost of programs, many scrapbook/ photo editing programs can be costly, but there are some out there free to get you started. I have been struggling to learn some of the techniques used in the photo editing programs, I have left my comfort zone. Even saying that I am pretty proud of myself when I figure something out.

Designers; why don’t the designers merge? I have to admit I am in awe over the awesome stuff digital designers can create using software programs. (one of the things I struggle with) but I think it would be so cool if some paper designers came out with a coordinating digital kit to the paper kit. I know a lot of the papers out there from paper designers are just awesome, and I would love to use them, but I have to either drive to the lss (which is 30 minutes away for me) or buy it online and wait for the mailman to bring it to me.

Apparently the Pros out weight the cons on digital scrapping vs. paper scrapping in my book. I am not ready to give up the scissors and glue, but I am having fun digital scrapping. Not ready to jump into the digital scrapping world? Take some baby steps and try a hybrid!

In closing I wanted to note that at the Shanty, it is my feeling that this group of scrappers who are not just smacking down photos and journaling to get it done, but to have a creative outlet, both in the paper and digital scrapbooking techniques. It is my experience that If I have question about digital scrapping, someone is here to answer my questions, so thanks to all of you who have helped me. (you know who you are!) I am amazed at the talent in this group, I am actually somewhat spoiled by it. Some message board groups just don’t have the talent found here at the Shanty, so weather paper or digital scrapping you are sure to find creative and amazing scrapbookers among us, check out the Shanty gallery and be prepared to get a big boost of mojo and inspiration!
